Second week in Tokyo, Japan

First of all, yes I now live in Tokyo, Japan and this is part of my work, long-term. This all happened so fast and I didn't even have time to think much about it. I just said yes, that I'm up to the challenge of working here in the Japanese environment. I won't be home anytime soon though, the sad part.

It's just my second week here and I couldn't even tell if I like it here or I miss home or whatever emotion I'm feeling. Still in the confused part actually.

Japan is beautiful, clean and high-tech. I've experienced things which are not found at home in Cebu - trains, restaurants using vending machine, and most especially, the cold. It's really cold in here and though it's really not a pleasant thing to experience, this is better than Philippines' extreme heat. I got easily used to wearing thick clothes when going out, mist forming on my breath, or the sun deceiving you that it's hot outside when it's still really freezing. But there are a gazillion things though I miss about home - my family, loved one, friends, everything Pinoy. I rarely see any Pinoy walking around the streets of Tokyo.

In my first 2 weeks here, I've already been to Meiji Jingu, Takeshita Street in Harajuku, Akihabara, Okachimachi & Musashi-kosugi. By the way, I live in Gotanda and work in Chiyoda. I have tried going out alone and even went to Musashi-kosugi by myself to see my friend (with lots of bloopers in between). Basically, I'm not afraid to get lost.

Here are some photos.

More updates soon. And yes, I'm back on Posterous (even though it's now by Twitter).

Overspending on camera lens, accessories upgrade (Part 2)

This post is continued from Overspending on camera lens, accessories upgrade.

I want to share a sample case. Daniel (not real person) has a Canon DSLR which came with a kit lens. He started using the lens. To his disappointment, he couldn't get the pictures right. He figured he should upgrade to get better pictures. He bought a zoom lens. To his disappointment again, he couldn't get the pictures right again, either they were too grainy, overexposed, or with unnatural colors. So he decided to get now a prime lens (since he heard how amazing it is). To another disappointment, he still couldn't get the pictures right. As a reader, can you tell what the main problem is? Focus is given on lens upgrade, NOT on skills upgrade. The solution to a not-well-taken photo is to enhance skills, and not buy more lens.

This has become a talk running on the edges of photography and money management, really.

Overspending on camera lens, accessories upgrade

To all photographers out there, pro and amateur alike, when do you think is the right time to upgrade your camera lens and add other accessories?

I am speaking as a photography enthusiast here and will comment based on my observations.

Photography has become a hobby of the many ever since DSLRs became accessible to the public (including me). Many think though that the better or high-end your camera goes, the better you become as a "photographer". Somewhat true. Undeniably, the more expensive camera bodies and lenses offer more quality and assurance than the lower-end counterparts. But in the end, what does truly matter in photography? I'll quote a high school classmate with his statement:

Photography is all about passion and skill, not purchase!

(Since I am just quoting, I have to include the exclamation point at the end.)

よわよわカメラウーマン日記: more than ordinary jump shots

I discovered a photography website called よわよわカメラウーマン日記 (Yowayowa Camera Woman Diary) which features levitation photos everyday. The everyday photo (本日の浮遊) brings us beautifully-captured levitation photos. If you are confused with what levitation photos mean, it's just like a jumpshot, only more elegant and with meaning.

Here's a sample photo, one which caught my interest:

Natsumi's (the photographer behind the website) photos gave me an idea to try levitation photos in my next casual photoshoot.

If you'd also like to try and have no idea on how to do a levitation photo, check out her About page where she shared her actual method on taking levitation photos. If you are practicing reading in Japanese like me, read the untranslated portion.

Day 1 of walking to work

Just yesterday, the 06H jeepney (route to Guadalupe) which stops right beside our office building changed route and took the other side of Cebu Business Park.

This only means one thing: I'll walk to work everyday from Chinabank to our office. :(

I have no problems with walking; I have problems with being exposed to the sun. I hope I get used to this. OR I hope they bring back the old 06H route.

Blue (arrowed) line on map is my new walking route. Also the same route on my way home.
